FAQs

  • Let’s find out together! Therapy “working” means something different to everyone and very much depends on your unique goals. If you’re ready to set clear goals and have honest conversations about what is and isn’t working for you, then therapy will likely be a very productive investment of your time, money and energy. And if you’re finding that it’s still not working, there are no hard feelings on our end — we’ll openly discuss what we can change to more effectively help you make progress. We are committed to collaborating with you to be maximally helpful to you.

  • If you'd like to connect, we invite you to send us a note to schedule either an initial session or a free 15-minute video consultation. During the consultation, we’ll discuss what you're looking for and hoping to achieve through therapy and how we can help you. We look forward to hearing from you!

  • No, we only work with clients virtually. We believe that this offers our clients the greatest flexibility and comfort. Research has shown that virtual therapy is just as effective as in-person therapy and, at times, there are distinct benefits and advantages to virtual therapy (especially if you like to avoid commuting!). If you prefer to work with someone in person, we are happy to provide referrals for colleagues who are doing so.

  • The length of therapy depends on what you are hoping to achieve and how consistent you are willing to be. While it’s impossible to give a set timeline, anecdotally, many of our clients see significant progress in their lives within 1 year of our work together, and often much earlier. Even when clients have achieved their goals, however, many choose to continue therapy with new goals in mind. Others may choose to take a break from therapy to integrate what they’ve learned from our work together. Both options are exciting milestones and worthy of celebration!

  • Individual sessions are 50 minutes and set at a weekly or more frequent cadence — you are welcome to discuss meeting more frequently with your therapist. Longer sessions can also be scheduled at a higher rate.

  • That’s a great question! First of all, that’s a bummer! Secondly, and unfortunately, many of our clients come to us having had lackluster past therapy experiences. We’ve heard about people feeling judged, invalidated, misunderstood, patronized or just not having made much progress because their therapist was kind but passive or simply not very skilled. Our style is active and infused with warmth, connection, understanding and empathy — and we never push our own agenda. We are the facilitators of you reaching your goals. In fact, we welcome clients to be open and share with us when something isn’t working for them or doesn’t feel good — we believe this is actually an excellent way to practice healthily navigating relationships.

  • Like most NYC providers, we are out-of-network providers. This means that we do not accept insurance, and you are responsible for the full cost of your session. However, while we do not accept insurance, we will provide you with the receipt (a monthly “superbill”) necessary in order to submit a claim for reimbursement from your insurance company. To find out whether your insurance plan covers therapy sessions with us, fill out this form, and you’ll receive an answer within 24-48 hours. Or, you can follow these 5 simple steps to determine your out-of-network benefits for mental health. We wholeheartedly understand what an investment therapy is, both financially and logistically, so it’s important to us to deliver the highest quality care to you, so that our work together has a positive impact on the rest of your life, no matter how long we work together.

  • Many research studies show that the biggest factor in a successful therapy experience is the relationship between the therapist and client. So, making sure you’re comfortable with your therapist is really important. Sometimes people compare therapy to dating — you feel a connection, a warmth, a sense of being understood, even if you might still experience some anxiety. Anxiety isn’t a bad thing, and a good therapist will help you steady your anxiety so that you can meet your challenges head-on without feeling overwhelmed. We’re also strong advocates of being honest and open with your therapist, especially during early sessions, to best ensure that you two are a solid match. As part of the therapeutic process, we will continually check in to assess how the relationship fits your needs. In the end, sometimes it’s just not a good match, and that’s completely okay — when that happens, we are always happy to provide referrals for other therapists.

  • Every session’s content is decided by you. While we will help you to focus and stay on track with your goals, we will never force you to discuss anything that you are not ready to or simply don’t want to, for whatever reason. All of our work is done with the explicit permission and safety of our clients. With this in mind, anything is on the table for discussion in therapy, provided we are able to treat the problems you are hoping to work on.

  • Nope! Therapy is not about giving or getting advice. We believe that you have all of the answers within you, and together we will get curious about your internal world and how you can use it as your compass for how to live externally. We’ll dial down the noise and get clear about what’s right and best for you as a unique individual.

  • We accept credit, debit, HSA and FSA cards and cash paid electronically via a secure online platform. No matter how you wish to pay, a valid card must be saved on file prior to your first session. You will be charged automatically after each session.

  • A single 50-minute session ranges from $165 to $255, depending on who you choose to work with. If you have out-of-network coverage through your health insurance plan, then you can be reimbursed for part or all of the cost. To find out whether your insurance plan covers therapy sessions with us, fill out this form, and you’ll receive an immediate answer. Or, you can follow the steps outlined on the same page to determine your out-of-network benefits for mental health directly with your insurance company.

  • Although normal life circumstances may arise, such as last-minute work conflicts, family emergencies, childcare demands, pet issues, and/or illness, making it challenging to keep your appointment, regular sessions are essential to a constructive therapeutic process. Since the appointment time has been set aside just for you, and it is not always possible to fill that time at short notice, we have a strict 48-business hour (Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm ET) cancellation policy. There will be a charge for the full session fee for any session missed or not cancelled or rescheduled at least 48 business hours (Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm ET) in advance. Please note that these fees cannot be reimbursed by insurance, and you are responsible for the full cost of your session. No exceptions are made.
